Secret History of Star Wars

'During the publicity period of Revenge of the Sith's release, Lucas made it very clear that he would never be making the sequels. Instead, he insisted the media had invented the idea of sequels, which wasn't the case at all, but this may have been his way of dodging the responsibility of letting some fans down.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports on May 12, 2005:

"What about the third trilogy of sequels: the episodes VII, VIII and IX that have been reported many times over the past 28 years to exist in his head? Lucas says that was always mostly a ‘media invention.’ ‘The truth is there’s no place to go with the story.’ "

Similarly in Empire Magazines May 2005:

"The rumour of Episodes VII, VIII and IX was a popular question, and Lucas summed it up with one word, and then two: ‘Never! Absolutely never!’ Luckily for us, he then elaborated. ‘This is all that’s ever been written about it. It was the story of Darth Vader, you know, it starts when he’s 10 years old and ends when he dies."

As well as MTV online on September 10th, 2004:

"This was never planned as a nine-episode work. The media [pounced when] I made an offhand comment, ‘It might be fun to come back when everyone’s 80 and do another one of these.’ But I never had any intention of doing that."

And again in Merge Digital in 2006:

"Merge: Can this really be the end of the Star Wars saga?

Lucas: Yes. The series starts with Darth Vader as a young lad and ends with him dying. So I don’t know where else I can take it.

Merge: Wasn’t there talk at one time of three trilogies?

Lucas: That was created by the media, not me.”

Finally, he speaks with Total Film magazine in May 2008:
Total Film: Are you happy for new Star Wars tales to be told after you’ve gone?

Lucas: I’ve left pretty explicit instructions for there not to be any more features. There will definitely be no Episodes VII-IX. That’s because there isn’t any story. I mean, I never thought of anything. And now there have been novels about the events after Episode VI, which isn’t at all what I would have done with it. The Star Wars story is really the tragedy of Darth Vader. That is the story. Once Vader dies, he doesn’t come back to life, the Emperor doesn’t get cloned and Luke doesn’t get married.”’

Whaddaya know? Proof of how full of shit George Lucas is.

Whaddaya know? Proof of how crazy SW fans are full of shit because as an OT SW fan since teen in 1977, I’ve NEVER heard Lucas saying the last trilogy was a media fabrication but that he was planning nine eventually EVEN MARK HAMILL admitted would be done by 2000.

BUT I HAVE been hearing crap by Famous Podcasting rumormonger fans that somehow there’s going to be even ANOTHER 4th trilogy Disney/Kennedy will try to crank out for money saying Lucas has always really wanted those but denied it.

Thus this trype is to pave the way for justifying the adnauseum trilogies fans will fantasize should be made and Disney happily create, saying ‘Lucas is lying he never meant them’. Such BS.

Self-reblog for argument’s sake.

1) I too am an OT fan and a fan of the EU. I am neither a fan of the prequels nor of Disney’s decision to erase the past 30 some years of creativity and hard work done by EU authors, artists, game designers and others. I agree that Disney will indeed be making trilogies ad nauseam and that the motivation will be to make loads of cash. However unfortunate I find that, they don’t have to justify anything, they have the rights.

2) These are verifiable, PUBLISHED interviews from magazines, etc, not blogs or Wikipedia, so get off your high horse. George Lucas has a talent for idiocy and for disrespecting his fan base (i.e. you and me). If you’ve watched the special editions, the prequels or Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, you know this. If you haven’t realized that a love of Star Wars and and a love of George Lucas (work and author) don’t necessarily have to coexist, then you aren’t familiar with anything of poststructuralist critical theory in the past fifty years.

3) It’s spelled “tripe,” lady.

Yes fuck nuts, I know how it’s spelled but didn’t feel like editing for you. It was joke for MY blog followers. ( I too have read and bookmarked the website you’re quoting). You act like you’ve discovered some lost covenant of god when it means nothing in the end. Lucas was going to have sequels sooner than later but money and responses to the prequels ended it. Your post using articles based on POST Prequels Lucas statements. Big WHOOPITY FUCKING DO. Old fans knew he was talking shit about never planning sequels. You didn’t find a treasure.

Fact of what is now today. Doesn’t matter whatever games he says in public and now Disney/Lucasfilms Kennedy are running the show and can put out whatever number of Star Wars sequels whether he did or didn’t really plan 9-12 total episodes. The 12 episodes story saying he wrote that much in his first transcripts are what I won’t ever believe.

And ps go fuck yourself with your pathetic little need for trying to make it some goddamn scholarly treaties using POST STRUCTURALIST CRITIQUE.
